Jim Smith was born and raised in Santa Barbara. He has practiced law in Santa Barbara County for over 45 years. In 2024 he was invited to join the Law Firm of Hollister and Brace.
Jim’s practice is focused on representation of Homeowner Associations, Landlords, Construction Law, and Real Estate. His practice includes mediation, arbitration and litigation arising out of his focus areas. Jim also acts as the Senior Trustee of a Real Estate Trust with holding throughout the United States.
Jim’s representation of clients has resulted in published opinions in Otanez vs. Blue Skies Mobile Home Park, Sandro vs. Harris, Zissler vs. Saville, and Watts vs. Oak Shores Community Association. In Watts vs. Oak Shores, Mr. Smith was the retained expert for the Association in which both the Superior and Appellate Courts relied on Mr. Smith’s opinions in ruling in favor of the Association.
Jim is one of the founding members of the South Coast Homeowners Association. South Coast was formed over 30 years ago for the sole purpose of providing educational forums and material to HOA Board Members and managers on laws and topics impacting the management and operation of Associations. Since its formation, over 140 Associations have joined South Coast. Mr. Smith has been one of the featured speakers at every annual legislative forum since South Coast was formed. Jim has also authored articles for South Coast and the Santa Barbara Rental Property Association.
Jim is a Member of the State and Santa Barbara County Bar Associations. He is licensed to practice law in all State Courts and the United States Central District Court.
